Harar of Ethiopia and good old time in memory

Harar states in Ethiopia and becomes the world heritage city by UNESCO in 2006. This city is full of Islamic culture and is the center of commerce. Although Ethiopia is known as one of the poorest countries in the world, Harar is growing and alive in its own way.¦

The Belgian photographer, Pascal Mannaerts - whose images were published in many leading magazines, travelled to Harar, the city where Islamic culture prospered. It has been also the center of commerce from 9th Century.

Harar is the combination of two main cultures. The city is divided into two sides, Islamic culture in the east and modern that influenced by Italian culture due to Italian colonial since WWII in the west. Moreover, as a result of becoming the center of cultural exchange since 13th century, the residential areas are also influenced by Arabian. There were 82 mosques and 103 sanctuaries. Nowadays Harar is known as “the forth holiest city of Islam” besides Mecca, Medina of Saudi-Arabia and Jerusalem.
